A pair of nesting tables that announce themselves quietly and linger long in the memory. The frames are wrought entirely in gilt metal, twisted into the convincing likeness of rope, with legs that descend to finely cast tassels and a lower apron of looping cord, knotted at each corner with remarkable attention to detail.
The glass tops are set within rope-twist borders finished with a delicate beaded edge, and the overall gilt has mellowed beautifully over time, warming to a rich antique gold with soft traces of verdigris emerging at the lower sections. It is the kind of patina that cannot be manufactured, only earned.
The rope and tassel motif carries a long and distinguished history in the decorative arts. It appeared first in the carved and gilded interiors of 18th century Europe, a favorite device of the Rococo and Neoclassical periods, before finding new expression in the wrought iron workshops of 19th century Italy. Florentine craftsmen in particular became celebrated for their gilt iron furniture in this manner, producing pieces of extraordinary delicacy for aristocratic households across the continent and, eventually, for export to America. By the middle of the 20th century, the form had been warmly received into the Hollywood Regency canon, where its inherent theatricality and sculptural confidence made it an ideal companion to lacquered surfaces, mirrored walls, and rooms designed for living well.
They work beautifully as nested tabled or independently, and suit a wide range of settings from Palm Beach Regency and English Traditional to the more spirited maximalist interior.
