Large Vintage Wedgwood Etruria Pitcher C. 1930s - English Hunt Scene With Hound Handle
This pattern is inspired by the Cumberland hunting song "D'ye Ken John Peel" from Barlaston, England. This translates to "Do you know John Peel?" and was written around 1824 by John Woodcock Graves (1795–1886) in celebration of his friend John Peel (1776–1854), an English fox hunter from the Lake District.
The motif on the pitcher features men in red jackets on a fox hunt. In a bucolic scene, the men ride in a paddock with their fox hunting hounds and horses. The handle of the pitcher is in the shape of a spotted hound, and when you look at the pitcher face on, it almost appears the hound is peaking out from the other side of the pitcher.
